Community Spirit Awards, officially the Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award is given to a collegiate football player who has helped others through community service. Here’s a brief overview of how the award came into existence, and what the awards process is.
Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award
The Origin
The award is named after Freddie Solomon, a collegiate football player who started his career at the University of Tampa. Later, he played for Miami Dolphins and then joined San Francisco 49ers, where he played a substantial role in making the team win the Super Bowl championships twice. His football career lasted for 11 years when Freddie returned to Hillsborough County and made an everlasting event.
However, what makes Freddie unique is what he did after his retirement from professional football. For the next twelve years, he dedicated his life to grooming the youths of Tampa Bay. Freddie worked with the Sheriff’s department to teach kids the lessons of life, along with providing them with a robust skillset in football. The efforts he made influenced the youth for the course of more than 20 years, with some of his learnings still embraced and followed in the community.
The Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award carries forward the legacy of Freddie. It is a small moto of appreciation for collegiate players that have made efforts to add value to the community. Every year, a football player that had a positive impact on the lives of others is honored and awarded.
Awards Process
There is no pre-made list for the award, and each year, universities can submit candidates for this award. To submit, the college needs to submit the name, along with the grade point, community contribution, and the reason why the player deserves the award. All the submissions are reviewed by the Soloman Family to select the player that deserves to win the award. The DeBartolo Family Foundation sponsors the award.
