The Community Spirit Awards started in honor of Freddie Solomon, a University of Tampa college player that played for Miami Dolphins for three seasons. Then, he joined the San Francisco 49ers, where he played a pivotal role in helping them clinch the Super Bowl Championship twice. His 11-year old career in the National Football League was widely recognized and appreciated.

But, what he did next was what led to the founding of the Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Awards. He devoted his next twelve years to the youth of Tampa Bay, where he worked with the Sheriff’s department to train the kids in football, along with teaching them life lessons. Not only did his lessons impacted more than two decades of the youth, but his teachings are still renowned and appreciated in the community.

The Community Spirit Awards is an initiative to continue Freddie’s efforts to make the world a better, more helpful place. Thus, Premier Players honors a college football player every year who has impacted the lives of others through social and community service.

How does the award process work?

Each season, universities and colleges can submit their candidate recommendations to Premier Players. The submissions include details like grade-point average, on-field performance, and recent community involvement. After receiving the nominations, they are forwarded to The Solomon Family for the final results.

The 2017 SEC Freshman of the Year led his team to a 12-1 record at the SEC Championship by throwing for 2,173 yards and completing 21 touchdowns. In the SEC championship against Auburn, Georgia was having an excellent running game but the moments came when Fromm soaked the pressure and worked the ball over the field. The Georgia Bulldogs lost to Auburn by 40-17, and this victory was unexpected and special, with Fromm playing a crucial role.

Tripton, in a phase of his life, has dealt with such challenges as well and was inspired by his struggles to ensure no member of the Pitt Athletics community faces similar adversities. Tipton also served as a volunteer at Waypoint Youth and Community Center and promoted the importance of education and reading at schools.

Eat the Last Fund is another initiative taken by Premier Players for serving and helping those in need: orphans, fosters, and families. This fund consists of donating to shelters and children’s homes, providing lunch to teachers, adopting familied near the holidays, and doing everything possible to bring a positive change in the lives of disadvantaged kids and families.

The PASS Fund

The PASS Fund is an initiative taken to provide scholarships to basketball camps for disadvantaged girls and young women that showcase potential and promise to play the game but are not able to afford to get professionally trained. They get access to camps and professional training, which provides them with an opportunity to play and participate in competitive events.

Many students are orphans or come from low-income families, and the PASS Fund gives them a platform for future success by offering them athletic scholarships. It also helps them attend college, develop soft skills, and attain lucrative employment after high school. In addition, the PASS Fund also helps increase positive behaviors in the students by providing mental health sessions and training.
